Borland load test shows Platform Lab service, agility

Need a load testing environment for 3 weeks? No problem. Need servers, bandwidth, a gigabyte switch, VPN access and lots of other things? No problem. Need it tomorrow and all done for less than $6,000? When you're talking to Platform Lab, that too is no problem.

Borland, a leading provider of technology for software applications, had a very valued client who wanted to perform a load and scalability test but did not have the environment to do so. In fact, neither did Borland. So Borland contacted Platform Lab -- the nation's only non-profit IT load testing facility -- to see what its director, Steve Gruetter, could do.

"I called [Steve] at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon and he called me back within minutes," said Borland's Lisa Goodman. "And by the next day, he had a quote on what it would cost; and then the next day he had the load test environment ready to roll."

Though not an elaborate load test environment, Platform Lab rapidly met Borland's testing specifications, including 5 servers (HP DL380 dual core 3.4 GHz dual processor servers with 6 Gb RAM and loaded operating systems), a Cisco 3560 gigabit switch, 10 Mb of bandwidth for 6 days and 1 Mb of bandwidth for 15 subsequent days, VPN access and remote access (a Borland necessity). They met it all with less than a 48 hour window and to top it all off, the 3 week test term cost Borland less than $6,000.

"Steve is amazing. He doesn't promise what he can't deliver and working with him is so easy," said Goodman. "Platform Lab delivered the environment we wanted, when we wanted it. And if something needed to change, it was done right away. We had contact with other testing labs, but it was cost prohibitive and things took weeks to get done. But Platform Lab has great agility. And the ability to work remotely was another huge value because it allowed our consultant to work at their own home."

It was a short-term success, but one that has realized long-term benefits for the technology group. Goodman described Borland as "shying away" from testing opportunities because of a lack of viable resources. But now, "If I get this opportunity again, I can now say that we absolutely have an environment to do these tests."
