08/16/2010   Future of Work Series 2: The Visible and Invisible Job Market
5:30 PM

Join Tech Columbus' CareerTrack on August 16th from 5:30-8:00 to learn how to find the best way to prospect for the advertised and often unadvertised job/career openings.Presented by Chris Ferguson of Robert Half Technologies & Janice Worthington, Worthington Career Services

Today’s employment market requires you to be especially proactive and resourceful. You’ll have to do much more than scanning help wanted ads in the Sunday paper, or going online to Monster, CareerBuilder or Ladders. These approaches have a place, but you need to be creative about prospecting for job openings, especially those that are unadvertised.

There is both a visible and an invisible job market. The visible market is just the tip of the iceberg and includes jobs you can find listed in:
Sunday paper want ads
Online job sites
Employment sections of a company’s website
Search firms or employment agencies

You’ll have to use reactive, formal approaches to respond to these opportunities. It can be difficult to get noticed because of the sheer number of applicants you’re likely to compete with. And many jobs are filled by the time they’re advertised.

Most job seekers have better luck finding a position within the invisible market, which is unadvertised. You need a proactive, informal, approach to uncover opportunities such as:
Internal openings that companies fill through staff recommendations
New positions that a company might create specifically for you
Modifications to existing positions to fit your skills
Jobs that are soon to be added at expanding companies (you may be able to uncover potential opportunities by studying business journals or other media)

You must use your networking skills to reach the key decision makers who wield power in the invisible job market. And remember that you cannot fail at prospecting unless you fail to prospect.

You will also learn How to Use Business First in your Job Search presented by Cat Bauman of Business First

Searching for a new career or looking for that next step on the ladderof success? Join Cat Bauman for an interactive session that will teach you how Columbus Business First can assist you in finding job leads and
networking opportunities.

Learn how to navigate the Business First
Recognize warm job leads in news stories and features before anyone else

08/26/2010   BUSINESS BREAKFAST: Creating a Culture of Innovation – Demystifying the Process
7:30 AM

From new markets to mature markets and across every industry, innovation plays a critical role in an organization's success. A culture of innovation, when done right, gives you a competitive edge because it makes you more nimble with an increased ability to sense and respond to change.

But a culture of innovation is more than new ideas. It needs to be repeatable, predictable, and sustainable. This only happens when you treat innovation like you treat all other capabilities in your business. This means having, amongst other things, a defined process. Your company's culture is a living, breathing and ever-evolving entity. It's defined more by your actions as a leader and the people you hire than by your words or wishful descriptions in the corporate handbook. More importantly, culture is the energy that fuels innovation.

Our panel includes:
Michael A. Teets - OCLC Vice President, Innovation
Kameron deVente - VP Navigator Management Partners LLC
Susan Alexander - Founder, Rosebud Coaching & Consulting

Take Aways:
Share Latest thinking in how to structure an organization to support innovation
Talk about a systems approach to innovation ďż˝ what are the elements
Stories from successful companies
Qualities individuals demonstrate that supports success
Conversations that support innovation vs. incremental improvement

Agenda:
7:30-8am: Networking and refreshments

09/13/2010   JavaScript Craftsmanship: why JavaScript is worthy of TDD
6:00 PM

If you are doing any development that involves JavaScript you don't want to miss this presentation. I know Justin is working with JavaScript for quite sometime and uses tdd for JavaScript.

Only yesterday, an experienced candidate told me in an interview that "JavaScript is just a scripting language, because it is not object-oriented." All-too-common is the perception that JavaScript is a second-rate toy language that is only suffered by "real" developers because no alternatives are available to web clients. While these misperceptions have dissipated greatly among highly engaged developers, the industry has been exceptionally slow to catch up.

09/29/2010   agileLUNHCBOX - Test Driven Development with Jon Kruger
12:00 PM

The combination of technical and business oriented topics:

Test-Driven Development In Action (more technical in nature, with code demos)

Test-driven development is a development technique where you write unit tests before you write your actual implementation code. Does that sound crazy to you? Well, if crazy means ending up with more maintainable, higher quality, well designed code and a lower stress level, then you've come to the right place. Come along for the ride and I'll show you how to get started down the path to TDD enlightenment and how behavior driven development can help you ensure that you write code that actually does what the business wants it to do with drastically reduced bug counts.

Why Should You Care About Test-Driven Development? (more business-focused)

What is test-driven development, and why should you care about it? What is the ROI on unit testing? Is TDD going to make your projects take longer? What do you need to get your team started with TDD? Test-driven development is an essential part of many successful Agile projects and has revolutionized the way that I write software. Come get your TDD questions answered and find out how TDD can help you write better software.
